“The first patient I admitted that day was 17 years old and had renal failure, sepsis, acidosis, and severe hyperkalemia. His question was, ‘Will I die?’

I answered as best I could, ‘No.’ His chart showed congenital obstructive uropathy, chronic renal failue, and infection with a pseudomonas resistant to all the antibiotics available to us. Gentamycin was marketed in 1971.”
